What does your writing life hold in store for you for the New Year?
If you haven’t thought about it perhaps a moment of reflection on the past year is needed in order to take inventory of those things completed and those things that yet need to be finalized. If they are important and are supposed to be – you will finish them. Everything you do will become part of your creative repertoire whether or not it is complete, whether or not it is published. It all is part of your journey and helps you to hone your craft and become a better writer.
Sometimes we write words that are for our own benefit and they will never see an editor or publisher – they are for our own use; they cleanse our mind and free us from their consumption; they are cathartic; they are just words based on our own feelings.
However, as writers we have those words we wish to share even if it is just with our own group – they validate us as writers and give us some measure to grade ourselves against. I do not feel that any one writer is more a writer than the next – they may, however, be better writers because of their conviction to learning and practicing and improving. If you have words you wish to share let this be the year that we work together to get them out there in whatever way we can. Submit something to the newsletter. Write a piece to post on the web site. Work on your novel in our workshop. Use the prompts and exercises to produce pieces to share at the Writers Circle. Join us and be a part of the group when you can and participate in any manner.
Upcoming events for the WFSC will include the Arts Gala hosted in February by the Arts & Culture Council of Strathcona County; our own Novel Workshop starting January 26th; we will celebrate our 5th year anniversary with a Writers Conference in April. The most important aspect of this group is, however, the support and direction it gives to all members who share a passion for words – it is about the writing. It is about your words.
As we go into the New Year, let us celebrate our passion and spirit as writers. We are a hardy, imaginative, creative, loving, caring, daring, charming, informative, resourceful, confident, supportive, feeling, varied bunch of people with a similar goal – to write.
Here’s to 2010 and all that words have to offer us.
